Every June, I wear pink to raise awareness and funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation as part of the Go Pink campaign. And every June, I say I’ll keep it simple — wear pink, make a pink button — but somehow, it always becomes something more.. This year marked my sixth year supporting Go Pink, and I made a quiet but determined promise to myself at the start of the month: ✨ One pink product, one pink button, and wear something pink every day for 30 days. ✨ I didn’t expect how much those little moments — of colour, creativity and consistency — would add up to something really powerful. 29 Shades of Strength Across the month, I showcased 29 different SeneGence products, from eye colours to glosses, blushes, powders and lipsticks — some old favourites, some brand new. I got creative with layering, colour mixing, “power duos” and tips I’ve picked up from our amazing Sene community.. One of the most surprising wins? Posting a reel every day. Even when Facebook glitches made me cry. Even when I nearly missed the midnight deadline. Even when I wasn’t sure anyone was watching. Because I’d made a promise. And I wasn’t just wearing pink — I was showing up in it. Buttons with Heart My Buttons by Brooke page also joined the campaign again, with a daily pink button creation. Some days it was a fridge magnet, some days a badge reel, and many days, good old-fashioned hair ties. A few became crowd favourites. Others were simply “a button a day” to keep the excuses away.. The one that stands out for me most? A pink western boot fridge magnet on Day 28 — a playful nod to the fashion trend (and a deeper one to the women walking difficult roads). It felt like a full circle moment: from playful to powerful. From pretty to purposeful. From fabric to feeling. Fashion That Fights Back I also wore pink every single day. Bright pink pants. Leopard jumpers. Blush pink scarves and thermals. Even when it was freezing cold, even when I wasn’t feeling fabulous, I found a way to wear the message.. And some days, that message was simple: “Keep going, even when you feel like giving up.” Not Just a Campaign — A Commitment I haven’t hit my fundraising goal yet. I haven’t had the sales spike I’d hoped for. In fact - no sales at all. But what I have had is a month of stories, smiles, and solidarity — with women I’ve met through the campaign, and with the women who can’t be here to wear the pink themselves.. I’ve learned how powerful it is to use what you have — even if that’s just a tube of gloss or a reel posted from your ensuite.. Because when we show up, we light the path for someone else. Today: The Pinkie Promise As we reach Day 29, I’ll be painting my nails with Pinkie Promise nail polish — a final nod to the promise I made, and the one I’ll keep carrying with me.. And I’ll be closing the campaign with my favourite lip colour: Kiss for a Cause — the same pink in my ‘Brooke’s Beaute Box’ business logo, the colour that says it all. Not because I don’t believe in the cause (I do), and not because I don’t want to (I really do), but because... it’s cold, I’m tired, and the reaction on socials has been slow. I’ve had days with no likes. No sales. The only donations so far have come from my Mum, my husband, and my personal donation to kick off the campaign. But here’s what’s keeping me going: I made a commitment to show up every day during June for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Go Pink campaign—and I meant it. Because there are people out there who can’t show up. Who would give anything to be well enough, strong enough, or still here to do what I’m doing. So I’ll keep going. Even if no one claps.. This daily campaign has reminded me of something an old IT mentor once told me: “Always know two ways to get something done.” When my Meta app glitched last week and wouldn’t post my reel, I didn’t give up. I tried another way—and it worked. That same mindset helped me figure out how to use Picture-in-Picture (PIP) editing for my reels—a small win, but a creative spark I hadn’t felt in ages. I’ve also been trying out new products, making fresh buttons, and pushing myself to tell little stories in new ways. Those things matter too.. If you're out there, showing up for something that matters and wondering if it’s making a difference—even if no one seems to notice—this is for you: Don’t quit. Someone, somewhere will see something you’ve done—maybe not today, maybe not even this month—but in a quiet way, it will inspire or encourage them. You just won’t always get to know about it. I served as Treasurer on the Committee for more than 10 years. It started as my real ‘job’ then it became my volunteer job, to which I roped my husband & family in to help as well. I personally travelled every bump & went over every whoop on the track, (not at the competitor speed of course). I loved seeing every racer’s name year after year, and then meeting some on Presentation Night when they collected their trophies and dog spikes. I enjoyed making sure every spreadsheet balanced, every receipt was filed and every last dollar was accounted for. We were a small but mighty team. And then — I let it go. Because sometimes, doing the right thing means walking away. It didn’t end neatly. But integrity rarely does. I still feel it though. The red dust. The thrill. The smell of fuel in the morning. The rev of the engines. The annoying sound of motorbikes yet as a pack of ten off the start line, it was spectacular. The anguish for those lost or injured. The joy of the competitors who made it all worth it. I was there for them and most would never have known. I don’t miss the politics. But I miss them. The ones who raced not for sponsors, but for passion. The ones who reminded me why we do hard things with open hearts. This is why I Go Pink. Not because I’ve had breast cancer. Five years ago, I was in lockdown with my kids, working from home and homeschooling. It was a really tough time. I was also very new to social media and producing content for a direct selling business I set up to find myself again. Something just for me. Something where I could learn new skills, help others, meet new people and have an outlet from my real job. It was fun trying on all the different shades of lip colours I had at the time, but also fun to just pop into people’s news fields to provide a distraction from their own version of lockdown. Fast forward from 2020 into 2024 and things are much the same as they were pre-lockdowns except we have different stresses now, and perhaps we haven't all yet completely recovered from that time. But alas, we go on. I hope I have raised more awareness during 2024. I know I've made people smile during the crazy colours. I hope we have lessened the stigma about mental health a little bit more. You can't pour from an empty cup and self-care isn't selfish. Todays statistic shows that only 30% of women know exactly where to go to seek help for their mental health issues. 60% have a ‘general idea.’ So here are some numbers and places you can seek out if you need help. It's that feeling of everyone staring - that's what it feels like to me. Like when you walk into a room and everyone turns and looks at you. Nothing can prepare you unless you prepare your mind for it. 22% of women who have PMDD also have social phobia. Their PMS symptoms are more severe which leads to severe irritability, depression & tension. Their hormone levels fall so I guess the trick is to counteract them at this point. Easy to say right as a non-sufferer. But as someone who has experienced many bouts of anxiety in the past, has avoided situations or simply not left the house to again avoid these situations, this is what I do now. If I feel the signs of anxiety coming on, I prepare. I get dressed in something that makes me feel good. I listen to music which either helps pick me up and calms me down. Washing my hands can be soothing the same as standing in the sunshine with the rays on my face. Doing my self-care routine of skincare & makeup makes me feel good. Being positive in my own head also helps to bring about that confidence I need to step into that room. You need to believe that you are good enough and deserve to be in the place you are. And if all else fails, just turn up, do the thing and escape back to your safe zone. The only way to conquer the fear is to keep trying new ways to tackle it. And always look for a silver lining, the anxiety didn't win today because I managed to do this one small thing. One thing I did learn was that perinatal anxiety can occur any time from the start of the pregnancy up to 12 months after the birth, Chances are, most mothers do experience this and just don't know it. Based on my own birth experiences, I'm surprised this percentage isn't higher. I had an emergency c-section with my daughter and a 27 hour natural labour with my son. They couldn't have been further apart if I'd tried. I was anxious when conceiving my daughter as the doctor thought I had PCOS which is why I wasn't getting pregnant. In between pregnancies, I also had my appendix out. Every woman will have a different story or issues that occurred leading up to or afterwards so we should also be aware of and check in on our new mum friends because they may seem fine, but that anxiety when it strikes, is confronting. It's so easy to be envious of other people in what they have & what you do not. The thing is, you never really know what other people are dealing with or going through. I've only ever met one woman who has discussed her vaginal health but 24% of women living with vaginal issues experience psychological distress. SO maybe that crazy woman running around town is just trying to disguise a condition she has to make herself feel better about facing other people, leaving the house, doing the school run, turning up to work. I remember during those lockdown periods, while others were enjoying their work from home ability, I hated it. You get used to working in teams, in collaboration, in person with each other so you can discuss issues and resolve them. There isn't a month go by that there isn't an ATO deadline to meet. Our clients are too busy running their businesses to meet these deadlines so we become a constant reminder to them that this is due or that is due. All the while trying to stay productive and up to date on all the latest changes that the government continue to deliver. I can think on my feet but sometimes I agonise over decisions that need to be made. It all depends on my mindset at the time or other external factors or my "What if" friend that visits. I like to think through everything, and did I mention I don't like change? I'm an Accountant & we work within the confines of rules and laws that date back through the ages. We also keep workpapers for everything! For someone that doesn't like change, I really should have picked a different career. When you're a mum in particular, you not only turn up to work with a set of tasks and surprises for the day, but you also consciously have all the kids appointments in the back of your mind. Probably also a grocery list of things to pick up before you go home and those bills on the fridge that need paying, Did someone put the bin out? Did I lock the car? Will the school (now they're teens) call that someone is sick and I have to leave work early to pick them up. Or, a client just phoned and the bank want up to date financials and their BAS from last quarter still isn't complete. People often tell me I'm different at work to if they see me outside of work. I just explain that when I'm at work, I'm 'switched on' but as soon as I'm out the door, I'm already two drop offs & two loads of washing away thinking of what else I have to do today & will I fit that walk in that I promised myself. Is it because this is the age associated with empty nesters? Is it because these women fail into a critical age bracket for employment. Or is it most likely due to peri-menopause or menopause. Being a woman is certainly full of challenges that our male companions do not go through so keep those communication channels open and seek the help or conversations when you need. And what about the parenting advice we throw at already overwhelmed new or expectant mothers. The Liptember statistic today tells us that Women under 39 years are likely to be facing a severe mental health disorder which is a significant increase in 2024, compared to 2022. Maybe we need generic Women's groups where we get together for support and guidance from our older peers. Are women under 39 not getting help because its not available or because they have no one to ask? Are these women stuck in a place where they feel forgotten because they're trying to do all the things with young kids and a job to maintain. Because the top 3 mental health issues facing 14-19-year-old girls in 2024 are body image issues (48%), depression (47%) and anxiety (41%). We obviously don't have the equivalent stats for boys, but I feel they would be almost identical. It is a difficult time to be a parent in the age of social media, but being connected to your kids will help identify if these issues are hurting your kids. I often ask ... But I think I understand one reason why. A couple of years ago, I made an appointment to see my GP (not my regular GP because I don't have one - that needs a blog post all of its own) because I felt I needed help. I had issues at work, I wasn't coping at home & I was miserable. I was in a funk, I wanted help. My husband had previously sort help and he discovered he had PTSD. He got the counselling he needed, the coping strategies he needed. My GP gave me the mental health assessment test & I passed it. No need for counselling. He told me I was stressed and I should get a new job. He told me to look at my diet & get more exercise. Now how I did leave that appointment. Disappointed, unheard, mis-understood, angry. I believe this is why women don't seek help. They have tried and maybe had the same experience as me so have just gone on surviving one day at a time until we feel normal again. Our kind of normal. The normal that allows us to get up each day and do the things we need to do. But always in the back of our minds, the system let us down. I choose to go on knowing I am a survivor & I am strong but my heart cries for all the women that desperately need help but also are not receiving it. The system needs to change. It's sad that we have a day for this. It's even sadder that we lose people every day because they have not found a way to get the help and support they need. What is one conversation could have saved them? My first hand experience with suicide was at University with my room mate. I found her all bloody and passed out on her bed in our room. She was drunk and abusive and I was scared. This girl who had become my best friend, gave no indication that things were bad. We had fun, but she drank too much. She was from Melbourne, I was from the country. She loved The Cranberries and Irish Dancing. I hated The Cranberries and loved all dancing. She loved to drink Raspberry Sub Zero's & I loved a Fruit Tingle. She was always the life of the party. Maybe that was the indication. I quickly ran to get our floor RA who was a second year nursing student and then fled the scene. I needed the quiet. I needed some space. I needed to not see the bloody scene in my head. After being all bandaged up, my room mate was ok, quiet, probably embarrassed, but she was ok. She didn't finish Uni and had left not long after this incident. We kept in touch for a while and then she went silent again. I think of her often and hope she is ok. This years Liptember research found that suicide and self-harm rates for 14-19 year olds (like my room mate at the time) are 16%, which is more than double that of the general female population at 6%. But there's a huge number of women that suffer from PMDD - Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) - which is a severe form of PMS that includes physical and behavioural symptoms that usually resolve with the onset of menstruation. 68% of these women also suffer with anxiety or generalised anxiety disorder. This must be crippling! My period is inconvenient, makes me moody, is sometimes painful, but mostly I just wish the days away quickly so its over. I do get anxious over other things - say I'm busy when I'm not - or won't leave the house if I don't need to. I get super anxious in a crowd, that feeling like you're there naked while everyone else is dressed and staring at you. And then I have days like today, where my lippy didn't apply great. When I think about women's mental health and the Queen in the same sentence, I imagine a woman that must have had an unmeasurable amount of mental strength. To take the throne as early as she did, to grow up in the public eye like she did, to raise a family in the public eye like she did. To deal with the issues her family caused in the public eye. The inner strength to uphold her public persona, particularly after the death of Princess Diana and her husband, is simply amazing to me. What did she do for her own mental health. Did she personally struggle at times. She could have taught us all so much more if time had allowed. Maybe no one asked the questions. Maybe these types of questions were not allowed. Given that 20% of women going through puberty also experience suicidal ideation and self-harm, we need more conversations and role models for these girls to look up to. The ParaOlympics in Paris, have taught us that anything is possible. It's also shown the next generation of disabled or challenged kids, they can achieve outcomes like this. I was so diligent after having my first baby, doing all those exercises. I had the little step to raise my knees above my hips, and I did those exercises daily. It became my routine as well as drinking enough water to ensure I had a milk supply. But alas I got lazy when I had my second baby. There was so much to do with a newborn and a toddler and my time wasn't as much my own as it had been first time round. The 2024 Liptember Foundations research has revealed that 42% of women who have pelvic floor disorders also experience body image issues. When you think about it, its so connected. Developing good habits, doing your exercises, drinking enough water, being social, being kind to yourself, looking after yourself better. I wonder what percentage of that 42% are Mum's? What if making sure are pelvic floors are looked after, would actually make us love our bodies and what they have achieved more?
