Winter Lips Need Love Too: Your Dry July Lip Care Guide
Let's Talk Lips
Dry July isn’t just about what you don’t drink — it’s about what your skin does need. And this week, we’re focused on an area that often gets overlooked until it starts to crack or flake: your lips.
Cold air, wind, heating, not drinking enough water (yep, we’re all guilty), and even certain lip products can leave your lips dry, tight, and uncomfortable.
So, here are five simple tips to keep your lips soft, smooth, and smiling through winter.
1. Hydrate From Within
You knew this one was coming, right?
Your lips don’t have oil glands, which makes them more prone to dehydration than the rest of your face. Drinking enough water throughout the day helps from the inside out. Herbal teas count too, and if you’re sipping coffee, balance it with water.
2. Gently Exfoliate (But Not Every Day)
If your lips are flaky or rough, gently exfoliating can help. You can use a soft toothbrush, a damp washcloth, or a sugar scrub. No need to scrub hard — just enough to smooth things over and remove that peeling skin.
I personally love the SeneGence LipSmooth Conditioning Polish, but even a homemade sugar + honey mix works in a pinch.
Limit exfoliating to 1–2 times a week in winter to avoid overdoing it.
3. Use a Hydrating Lip Balm or Overnight Treatment
Not all lip products are created equal. Some lip balms and glosses feel good for a second but actually make lips drier in the long run.
Look for ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax, and vitamin E. My personal favourite is the SeneGence Overnight Lip Mask — it’s rich, soothing, and actually works while you sleep. Plus it smells amazing! I’m not a fan of the LipVolumizer (it’s not for everyone), but I know plenty of others who swear by it.
Avoid petroleum-only products and those with synthetic fragrance if your lips are already irritated. If you’re not using SeneGence yet, try dabbing a little coconut oil or lanolin on your lips — even better if you gently press it in before bed.
4. Layer Like a Pro: Lip Balm First, Then Colour
Want to wear colour without drying your lips out further? Here’s my favourite routine:
Start with a light layer of balm or the Overnight Lip Mask during your skincare routine
Apply LipSense (it stays on all day!)
Finish with a glossy, hydrating top coat
Keep applying your gloss throughout the day
Remove your LipSense with the Ooops Remover at the end of the day
End with a thick layer of blam or the Overnight Lip Mask during your evening skincare routine
That way, you get colour and care. No flaking, no peeling.
5. Protect Your Lips Outdoors
Cold wind? Blasting heater in the car? Your lips need shielding.
Reapply balm regularly and use a scarf to protect your mouth when walking in cold wind. Don’t forget SPF lip protection on sunny days — UV rays can hit your lips too, even in winter.
Quick Tip: Your Lips Tell a Story
If your lips are feeling extra dry, it might be a sign you need more water, less heat, or gentler products.
And don’t forget to breathe through your nose when possible — mouth breathing can dry lips out fast (especially at night!).
